Paul was born in Madison and grew up in Platteville. His late father George was a former UW football student-athlete and assistant coach.

After quarterbacking Platteville High School to a state title, Paul joins the UW football team. He would earn three letters from 1986-1989 playing linebacker, safety, quarterback and tight end.

Paul and his wife Robin have three children, Katy, JoJo and Danny.

  • In last three seasons as Wisconsin’s Offensive Coordinator, the Badgers led Big Ten in scoring offense:
    • 2009 – 31.8 points/game
    • 2010 – 41.5 points/game
    • 2011 – 44.1 points/game
  • Coached Badger quarterbacks to the top two completion percentage seasons in history:
    • 2010 - .732
    • 2011 - .710
  • Oversaw two of the top six scoring offenses in the Big Ten since 1916
  • Under his direction, Wisconsin had a Big Ten record 48 rushing TDs in 2010 and 2011
  • Led Badger offense to 85 TDs in 2011, second-most since 1905
  • UW record from 2005-11 – 70-32 including five 10-win seasons in seven years
  • Oversaw first 3,000-yard passer and 1,000-yard rusher in single season in Pitt history
  • Responsible for:
    • Six of the top 10 total offensive seasons in UW history
    • Three of the top five third-down conversion percentages in UW history
    • Three of the top four completion percentage seasons in UW history
